It's no secret that no two people are exactly alike. That understood, the same can be said for golf swings as well. Add the two together and you can easily see the need for custom fit golf clubs.
There are two parts to my club fittings, and I'd like to share them with you.
Part 1: Static Fitting
Static fitting involves no swinging of the club, just the basic physical characteristics of the golfer being fit, along with a short interview to help me better understand what the golfer wants.
1. Gender: Hey guess what, Men and Women are different physically! While there are some Men who can take advantage of using a Woman's club, and some Women would benefit from a Men's set, the facts are that these are rarities but are always considered options. Men will trend towards longer, heavier, stiffer golf clubs, while Women are the exact opposite.
2. Dexterity: Simple enough right? It is something to look at for some players however, if one is ambidextrous it is important to determine which side of the ball the golfer will be able to play his or her best from.
3. Height and Wrist to Floor Measurement: This will give me the basic length I should make your clubs. Simply because you are tall, does not mean you need longer clubs, and the simple fact that you are short does not mean you need shorter clubs. You could be 7 foot tall and have abnormally long arms which would fit you to standard length. On the other hand, you could be very short and have very short arms as well so your clubs may even need to be longer than standard.
4. Glove Size/Grip Size: It is very important to get a good fit for your glove and grip. A comfortable glove that is not overly tight or one that bunches up when you put your hand on the grip is essential to a comfortable start to the swing. Too large or small of a grip can affect grip pressure and hamper the proper release of the club.
5. Interview: The next step in this 2 step process will tell the truth, but I always want to know what my students or customers want out of their equipment. Do they want to hit it farther, straighter, both? Getting a good feel for what they are looking for while also taking a look at the results of hitting a few balls for me will give me everything I need to know to fit them into a set of clubs that are a perfect match to both their swing, and physical stature.
Stay tuned for part 2 of my fitting process: Dynamic Fitting.
